Eat Less With No Effort

Talane’s Coaching Tip for the Week, June 14, 2010
Eat Less With No Effort
There is nothing like marriage to teach you about yourself. I grew up eating family-style with my parents and siblings. Mom always made more than enough food and put big bowls on the table and we helped ourselves to whatever we wanted with the one rule that we had to have at least one bite or taste of everything. We also had to clean our plates of whatever we took (not such a good rule and one that I don't use with my own children).
My husband's family eats quite differently. His mother makes exactly one portion for each person and measures everything out and serves up the dinner in the kitchen, pre-loading your plate and setting it on the table ready to eat. There is rarely the opportunity for seconds as there was only one serving in the first place.
I also noticed that my family is on the heavy side (to put it mildly) and my husband's family is pretty skinny. I joked that this has to do with the way we serve food. Well, yesterday I read in the illustrious Waitrose magazine that scientists at Cornell University have proven that this is, in fact, a very effective and relatively painless way to cut your caloric intake by as much as a fifth.
Apparently, if you don't see the food, you are less likely to eat it. A lot less likely. If you only see the food on your plate you natually tend to eat 20% fewer calories than if you have the bowls of food right in front of you. I guess that chance for second helpings is just too tempting to resist!
So there you have it. A quick and easy way to cut the calories without resorting to calorie counting or dieting. So simple!
Enjoy!

Talane’s Coaching Tip for the Week, June 7, 2010
Perfect the Present
Dissatisfied with something in your life? Whether it is the feeling that your financial life is out of control, bogged down by too much clutter piling, irritation with a boss, colleague or spouse, or just feeling there is too much to do and too little time, there is a solution.
Take one area that is bothering you and perfect it. If it is your work, spend some time tossing out old files and clearing off your desk. Imagine that you will be moving to a new job soon and need to clean out your desk and get all your projects completed before you go. Handle any problems you are having with bosses or colleagues now so that you start your new job without burning any bridges and with great communication skills in place. If you don't know how to handle a difficult situation, seek advice from a mentor or work with a life coach to improve your communication skills.

If it is your home that is frustrating you, start with one room and make that perfect. One client started with the bathroom as it was the smallest room in the house. She changed the fluorescent light to a softer and more flattering bulb and threw out her old towels and bought new fluffy ones in a favorite color with a matching bath mat. Once one room is perfect then, you can start another. No need to race, just enjoy the process.

Take one small action today that will bring you one step closer to perfection in the area that is bothering you the most. If it is financial, then take a moment to clean out your wallet and organize your bills. You'll immediately start to feel a sense of control over your finances. Clutter getting to you? Then pick one small area and make it perfect – the kitchen junk drawer, a book case, the spices, etc.

Strangely enough, the sooner you perfect a situation, the sooner you'll be out of it.

It is also about learning to see the perfection in the imperfect. When I was taking pottery classes in New York City, the teacher said that there is no point in making a perfect bowl. The beauty and charm of a hand thrown bowl is its imperfection. He said, “If you want a perfect bowl, go to Pottery Barn and get one!” Ask yourself, “What is perfect about this situation?” Is there something you need to learn to do or handle?

Enjoy!

Vision Board Online!

Talane’s Coaching Tip for the Week, May 17, 2010
Vision Board Online

Hi all!

One of my clients has just showed me this super cool online tool www.listhings.com. In my latest book, Coach Yourself to a New Career, one powerful tip is about creating a Life Map or a Vision Board. The low tech simple way to do this is to get a cork or bulletin board and some push pins and index cards and post up images or index cards with your goals written on them. I do this myself and have a bulletin board just for my goals and wishes in view on the wall behind my computer. Now you can do the same thing online and access it anywhere you go! I love it and have made it my homepage so I see it every time I turn on my computer. You can use it for all sorts of things--writing a to do list, managing a project, posting your goals, wishes. And best of all, it is free!

Enjoy!

Talane's Coaching Tip of the Week : Becoming Rich.

Talane’s Coaching Tip for the Week, May 24, 2010
Becoming Rich
I've just finished reading one of Robert Kiyosaki's books, Retire Young, Retire Rich and thought I'd share a few bits that inspired me and seemed very appropriate given the current difficult and challenging economic times. He points out that ,“It has never been easier to become rich beyond your wildest dreams for less effort and less start-up capital.” This is primarily thanks to the low start up costs of an internet-based business. For those of you who are unemployed and struggling to find work, this may get you thinking in a different direction: “The trouble with selling your labor for money is that there is only so much you can do. If you learn to acquire or build assets to generate money, you can slowly but surely increase your income.” (FYI, assets are anything that puts money into your pocket as opposed to liabilities which take money out of your pocket. Your house, unless you have tenants paying rent, is a liability according to Kiyosaki, not an asset as most accountants might say, because your home takes money out of your pocket every month. This is a very different way of thinking – the way the rich think.)
In my own experience this has been true. When I was working at Chase Bank I worked very hard and was always disappointed with the paltry pay raise of 3% or 5% at the end of the year (I was obviously in the wrong department given the massive bonuses bankers get these days!) And this was supposed to make me feel like a valued employee? I was always limited in what I could earn regardless of how much value I added to the bank's bottom line. Now that I own my own business, there is no limit to my potential income. I can create product after product and over the years have developed a stream of passive income generated from royalties and product sales. Gradually my own business has evolved to the place where it is now making more passive income than active income (from actively coaching clients one-on-one). And in about one year we should be able to live on the passive income. If we downsized immediately, we could live on the passive income now. I don't say this to brag as I am certainly not an overnight success. I've been building my coaching company and creating assets (writing books, creating audio programs, etc.) for 14 years slowly and steadily. I'll be 45 when I am financially free next year. So it isn't a get rich quick scheme and I have a rich, but not lavish lifestyle. I started on the path to financial freedom when I was 29 years old and left the bank. But I am a whole lot better off than I would be if I had kept on working at the bank. And most important, I'm much happier!

So if you are unemployed or not happy in your job, now is the time to think about other options. Start that business that you've always dreamed of or get training in a completely different field that is better suited to your natural talents.

Enjoy!

Talane

P.S. If you lack clarity about what to do or need a bit of direction, then pick up a copy of my most recent book, Coach Yourself to a New Career: 7 Steps for Reinventing Your Professional Life, which has inspiring stories of people who have quit their jobs and started their own businesses or taken their careers to a new level. It is also full of helpful exercises to help you design your ideal life and the ideal career profile.   To order, visit www.lifecoach.com or visit your favorite online bookseller.

The Power of a Visual Reminder.

Talane's Tip for the Week of April 12, 2010

  • Talane’s Tip for the Week The Power of a Visual Reminder
  • New Coach Yourself to Success Online Program is popular and growing
Talane’s Coaching Tip for the Week, April 12, 2010     The Power of a Visual Reminder
If you'd like to leverage the one of the laws of attraction – like attracts like to reach your biggest goals, try this very simple, powerful technique.  Create a visual reminder of your top goals and wishes. You can write down your goals on an index card, post them up on a bulletin board and then add an image that represents each goal. One of my goals was to go to India this year to speak. I put the written goal up as well as a little sketch of an Indian goddess. And guess what? I'm heading off to India to speak to the Indian coaches!

You can make your visual reminders out of anything you wish  a piece of cardboard with push pins, a collage, a whiteboard, or just a piece of paper. Post it someplace where you will see it every day. Change the pictures and move them around on occasion to keep it looking fresh. Otherwise you may find it just melts into the background and you don't look at it.

Very simple, very cost effective and it works!
Enjoy!

Talane's Top Ten Tips for Setting the Right Goals and Achieving them Effortlessly

Talane's Top Ten Tips for Setting the Right Goals and Achieving them Effortlessly

One of the reasons people don't reach their goals is that they choose the wrong goals in the first place. Follow these tips and you'll be well on your way to accomplishing much more this year with a whole lot less stress.

1.     Delete all goals that are over a year old that you've made no real progress on in the last year. These are "dead" goals. Cross them off the list and pick something that actually excites or interests you.

2.     Only work on one major goal or project at a time. If you have too many big goals going at once (i.e. more than one!) you'll dilute your energy and may not accomplish any of them. A big goal may take six months to one year to complete or more. If your goal takes more than one year, break it down into one year chunks. The temptation is to have too many goals. Pick one and stick with it until it is done.

3.     Give your best hour of the day to your major goal or project. Do this BEFORE you open your email or check your voicemail. This should be obvious as email is a can of worms waiting to distract you and waste your precious time. Get into the office an hour early and work on this goal/project. Or negotiate to come in an hour later and stay at home to do it if that works better for you. One colleague only had half an hour a day to devote to writing and she wrote a book in one year.

4.     Set up a powerful structure for support. Most people rely too much on inspiration to carry the day. The problem with inspiration is that it is short-lived. Use the inspiration to set up a structure for support that will ensure your goals are accomplished. For example, working with a trainer or workout partner is a structure for support for fitness. Hiring a life coach is a powerful structure for support for reaching huge goals, joining a book club is a structure for support for making sure you read outside your comfort zone, hire a house cleaner to ensure your goal of a clean house is reached, etc. Getting the right structure for support in place makes reaching your goals a piece of cake! No will power is required with an excellent structure for support. Spend some time getting a solid structure in place--one you know will do the trick--and then all you have to do is show up.

5.     Match your big goal to one of your top four values or passions in life. If you don't know what your values are, read The Secret Laws of Attraction by Talane Miedaner where I've spelled out exactly how to identify your core values. Don't waste your life pursuing goals that really aren't that important to you.

6.     Eliminate distractions. Make a list of everything you are putting up with or tolerating (usually 60-100 things) and eliminate them. You can't afford to be slowed down by this stuff. (See tip 1. Coach Yourself to Success by Talane Miedaner).

7.     Put in place strong boundaries to protect yourself and your time. If you need peace to think, make sure your friends and family know not to call you after 8 p.m. Need a half hour to meditate or write? Make sure that your partner and family knows this and doesn't intrude on this special time. Most people need to expand their boundaries significantly.

8.     Get the right tools for the job. I had no idea how slow my old computer was until I got a brand new one. I finally recorded the audio book for Coach Yourself to Success because I had the right tools to do it at home (my fabulous H2 recorder and a Kindle!)

9.     Delegate the parts you don't like, can't do, or aren't good at. If some parts of a job are slowing you down, hire someone else to do it for you. I couldn't bear to write the proposal for The Secret Laws of Attraction so I hired a writer to do it for me. I had already written most of the book, but for some strange reason I just couldn't find the energy to write the proposal. Yes, it cost me a fair bit, but the advance more than covered the cost so it was worth it in the end. You don't have to do everything yourself. And if the goal is worthwhile, then it should be worth getting help along the way. Lots of famous authors such as Deepak Chopra and Tony Robbins have ghost writers. See--you don't have to even write the book yourself! (I do write my own books, just in case you are wondering.)

10.     Create the time and space for your big goal. It may mean cutting out some lesser projects or activities. Don't be afraid to reduce your social commitments, get off committees, and say "no" to new stuff that pops up. You now have a powerful reason and can say, "Thanks for thinking of me, but I'm dedicating all my free time to xyz project this year." Maybe you can enlist their support as well. I spent last summer writing my third book, Coach Yourself to a New Career, coming out this spring. And I even got a bit of tan too. But not before enlisting the powerful support of my mother and sister who looked after my two girls every morning so I could write. Don't be afraid to ask for lots of help.

Enjoy!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

I remember thinking that 2010 sounded so futuristic and imagined we'd all be running about in space suits and beaming ourselves up to wherever we wanted to go. We haven't advanced that much in the last ten years, but we have achieved something remarkable--we can communicate instantaneously for free to people all over the world via the internet. Now that is something. And it has been changing the nature of business and increasing the rate of change as ideas circulate quickly. It has never been easier to share your ideas. If you've got a story to share or wisdom to impart, set up a blog and get going.

If you haven't had a chance to do your list of accomplishments for 2009, I'd strongly recommend you do that before you go sailing off into the new year with your new goals in hand. Take a few moments to take stock of what you've already accomplished and what you are grateful for in your life. Then make that wish list for 2010. This is such an important exercise that I urge you to do this tonight if you haven't done it already. Every year I am amazed at how much of my wish list I actually get.  This time last year my husband and I had our house on the market because we didn't think we'd weather the recession--we are both coaches and a luxury item on most ledgers. Now we've taken the house off the market because we came up with the ingenious solution of selling part of the land instead. So there you go. We were sitting on a small gold mine of sorts and didn't even realize it until the recession forced us to think more creatively. And because so many people can't afford private coaching, I've come up with a plan to offer online coaching at a very affordable price (coming this January!)

As for New Year's resolutions-- forget about "lose weight and get in shape" and instead pick a goal that really excites you. Life is way to short to do something that doesn't thrill you.

Warmest,
Talane

P.S. This month I will be releasing a brand new online life coaching program based on my book, Coach  Yourself to Success, to help you reach your goals effortlessly (and very affordably!) Stay tuned!

P.P.S. Important notice! In the last year the lifecoach name was used to send out spam. I apologize profusely if you were the victim of these horrible attacks. This year, in an effort to prevent spam, we are upgrading to a protected emailing list account that requires that you opt-in to receive emails. In the next day or two you will receive a separate email from me with the subject line: Please confirm your subscription to Talane's Tips and Newsletters. In that email will be a link you can click to continue your subscription. I apologize for this inconvenience, but it seems to be the only way to protect from spam. Thanks for your cooperation! Talane
